Downey Jr 'promises tough Holmes'
Robert Downey Jr has said he will play Sherlock Holmes as a "bad ass" in Guy Ritchie's forthcoming adaptation of the famous sleuth story.The 43-year-old actor – who is currently receiving much praise for his role in spoof Vietnam movie Tropic Thunder – has said that he and Ritchie share similar ideas about how Holmes should be portrayed.
"I've got to spend some time with Guy and I love his take on it," he told the Sun newspaper.
"We're both martial arts enthusiasts and in the original stories of Sherlock Holmes, he's kind of a bad-ass and a bare-knuckle boxer and studies the rare, fictional martial art of baritsu.
"If you look baritsu up, they can't even really tell you what it is, so it gives us a lot of leeway."
Meanwhile, Ritchie recently dismissed speculation that Russell Crowe is to star as Holmes's sidekick Dr Watson in the new movie.
