Some of Hollywood's hottest writers lend their talents to this richly animated Batman anthology, featuring entries by David Goyer (BATMAN BEGINS), Josh Olson (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE), and Alan Burnett (BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES). With six stories in all, GOTHAM KNIGHT offers thrilling interpretations of the Caped Crusader, rendered in a style that recalls the dark and lurid lines of Japanese anime. Together, these interconnecting tales trace Batman from his early days battling evildoers in crime-plagued Gotham, to his later years as the metropolis's trusted defender. Along the way, the Dark Knight has shadowy showdowns with some of his most fearsome enemies, including Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Dead Shot. Chock-full of explosive action sequences and bat gadgets, this continuation of the Batman saga is sure to bowl over both comic book nerds and fans of the feature films.

Good with one exception.

fallingsky from , 3rd August, 2008

I ask you to excuse any blunders I have made regarding spelling and grammar and similar sounding words and severely dyslexic and this review was written with the aid of voice activated software. The animation and story of Gotham nights is, with the exception of the first story which I will come back to later, simply outstanding. The varied styles each one depicting a slightly different take on the familiar figure of the Batman work well and in some we are even given an insight into his fractured psychology through the use of the art. The only real criticism of the main body of the story is that on more than one occasion Bruce Wayne is left looking like just another androgynous manga hero. The first story is the least effective both in terms of animation, which is crude and blocky and in terms of the story which feels poorly written. It is obvious that is trying to give an everyday persons view of the bat the way in which it does that feels like it's trying to be too connected to the culture of the matrix. Other than this as I have said the animation and story are excellent, as well as the main feature though there are also some excellent bonuses. A short documentary discussing the villains of Batman and four episodes of the Warner Brothers animated series particular highlights.

Holy Bat-Crap!

A Customer from Consett, 21st November, 2008

I first thought about buying this when the Dark Knight was released, with Batman Begins on Blu-ray. But I waited for this, and I must say I'm dissapointed. Starting off, most of the plots in the segments (it is broken up into episodes) are aimed towards kids. But because of loads of blood in the feature, it gains a 15 certificate. There was an entire segment with Batman controlling pain. It doesn't compare with Batman Begins and defiantly not with The Dark Knight. Overall, I don't recomend this to the older batfans, and it's too gory for the younger batfans, so it's pretty useless.

worth the effort

Pugeater from , 6th August, 2008

The different artists and writers make this very unusual from anything you would expect from the Batman franchise. Infact if the writers had written some of the Batman films they would have been a hell of alot better, darker and more brooding. The documentaries about Kane, the creator of Batman were superb and heartwarming. The episodes of the animated series were ok. If you are a Batmanfan then its a must.

I gave this a one star, just because me and my boy do not like Anime. Also each story doesn't really link up well. The Batman seems to look different in all the stories and so do the characters. I got this film for my boy and he never enjoyed it. If you like all that Arty farty stuff, you might actually enjoy it.

Not even worth one star!

A Customer from Cheshire, 20th October, 2009

Absolute rubbish. I actually added it thinking it was a proper film and was quite disapointed when i realised it was a cartoon, but we decided to watch it to see what it was like. We had it on for about 15 minutes before we turned it off. The only good thing about it was the graphics.

Animation a no no

Vinnyy from , 29th September, 2009

Was OK story wise, but only two really stuck out in mind one being the last episode and the other being the Scarecrow episode other than that, the animation got on my nerves it was far too animé and in parts made the actors voices not fit with the animation. So results in 1 and a half stars unfortunately

fan of anime and batman .... but

John Bassil from England, 25th May, 2009

I have been a fan of the batman animated series/movies/comics of batman for as long as i can remember. And one of my other passions is anime movies and TV series so this is a perfect match right? ..... wrong! this was a major disappointment. Don't get me wrong the art styles are animation are fantastic but the dialogue and story lines used for all of the shorts are boring dull and failed to hold my interest. Avoid this at all costs
