However, dreams soon become reality when the evil witch Azkadellia transports DG and her parents to the Outer Zone. This sci-fi miniseries offers an alternative take on the classic tale of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ and stars Zooey Deschanel (WEEDS) as DG, Alan Cumming (THE L WORD) as Glitch, and Richard Dreyfuss (JAWS) as the Mystic Man.

Something to watch during the Xmas holidays.

r0lan6 from from London, 30th October, 2008

I found this movie to be quite charming, magical, with a good telling story involving really likeable characters (both villain and hero alike), a rather cute backdrop environment (dual star system, a striking city, beautiful towers, interesting contraptions, etc), and a very interesting history, with an equally interesting twist towards the end!!! But do remember that this is not a movie but a television series that is over 4 hours long! I would recommend you watch it in its original four episode installments, as this would provide you brief rest time, and will make this whole film a lot more watchable and enjoyable. Downside? Well this is a television mini-series so I won't be critical at all. Special effects are just right for this format, with an all-star cast of actors that you will know and love adding that bit if icing on this quite humble little cake!

Sent it back after watching part one

LKD from , 5th March, 2010

I had read good reviews of this mini series and so expected it to be a bit special. It was decidedly average. After one episode we decided to send it back and not bother wasting another 3 hours on it. We wanted to give it a fair chance but since one episode is 1 hour 30 mins, we had already watched nearly the length of a feature film and we were not impressed. Such a shame but I wouldn't recommend it.

Tin Man

An excellent, contemporary, version of an old classic - the 4hrs 30mins flew by. Great performances throughout. A must watch for any one with 4hrs 30mins on their hands.

Return to Oz

Monkeymanbob from , 26th November, 2009

As a sequel to The Wizard of Oz, this mini series has had a lot of praise heaped upon it. It's a strange one, some parts are beautiful to behold with some stunning CGI for the scenary, but very ropey creature effects elsewhere. I found it too long, with some unnecessary padding part way through and some of the acting can be a bit hammy, plus I kept spotting continuity errors, but thats my beef. The story concentrates on DG, a young lady from our world who ends up in the O.Z. (Outer Zone) and with aid of 4 friends she meets on the way, sets out to find her destiny. The main characters from the original are re-imagined for this sequel and I'm not sure that they worked all that well. If you are a fan of the genre then you'll enjoy it, but otherwise you may just find it a tad slow.

Not too bad

Did not expect much, but was impressed in the end. Was a bit long but did not feel like a complete waist of time.
