In director George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, seven people secluded in a Pennsylvania farmhouse face relentless attacks by reanimated corpses seeking to eat their flesh. The group, which includes a married couple and their daughter, a pair of young lovers, and an African American man, try to keep their sanity as the living dead try endlessly to enter the house until they are laid to rest by burning or a severe blow to the head. As they listen to news reports of the zombie plague taking over the eastern United States, the ever-decreasing band of survivors loses ground in their battle to both keep peace with one another and stay alive.
Romero's low-budget, homegrown classic went from being unable to find a distributor to becoming one of the most influential horror films of all time. Aside from its visceral impact years before realistic gore became the fashion, the film is also important for its portrayal of a black man as the protagonist during a time when race relations were an extremely sensitive issue in the United States. Romero's choice for the ending of his film also made a shocking and bold statement about the issue.

I watched this with my wife which is always a mistake. Discussing the movie afterwards we had two very different opinions. I do movies (a lot) but what you come to realise over time is that this can erode your ability to watch a film at face value. You find yourself looking for its significance in a wider context - was it definitive of a genre? the directors/actors best work? How it stood up comparitively with other films of the time? My wife views movies very differently. She lives in the moment and her opinion comes from the experience she's just had while remaining blinkered to any extraneous input. Historically Night of the Living Dead is an important film. Made on a shoestring budget with an unknown cast and untried director it gave birth to a genre that remains strong to this day. However, unlike the modern schlock-horror films that followed, this movie focused the psychological impact of events on the characters and the effects on a normal person when faced with extraordinary events. It is likely that opinions would differ vastly on the methods of defence and people would resent one person being better armed than the rest. The dialogue wasn't the best but the basic premise was there and it was great to see, in an early example, a black actor in a leading role that wasn't contrived through plot neccesity like In the Heat of the Night or Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. The zombies were passable and any shortfalls in their appearance was down to the cash strapped production and monochrome printing of the finished film. At the time of release in 1968, Night of the Living Dead was aimed squarely at a teenage audience who saw atrocities every night on their TVs courtesy of Vietnam with many of the target audience facing the prospect of serving overseas. This film tapped into the fears and horrors of the time with a youth who were ready for more terror than they had faced before. As a cinematic milestone this film ranks extremely high. However, as this is where my wife's opinion comes in, in 2009, without any of the social imperitives of the late 60's, this is cheap and nasty film making with unbelievable dialogue, poor acting, rubbish special effects and next to no story. So there you have it. Two very different opinions from different perspectives. Maybe one for the film buff but if you're looking for a cheap thrill this certainly isn't for you.

Stunning transfer of the classic horror..

A Customer from Croydon, 19th December, 2008

OK, so the setting and feel of the film including the special effects is very dated now by any means, especially in HD...However, the transfer, in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio is as sharp as can be. Although in mono sound and black and white colour, the images are outstanding. A perfect upgrade for any die hard fan of this classic horror film.

last night of the living dead

A Customer from Dundee, 15th December, 2008

for a movie thats around forty years old, shot in black and white with mono sound.... this does look good through blu-ray. Now and again i'm sure there were hints of a lower resolution, but for the most part this movie can once again hold its head above either of its remakes. I will intend on purchasing this title sometime in the future as the quality deserves it. The accompanying documentary is interesting if noot so that you can at least see the cast as they are now. However I would have loved a commentary to go with the main feature.
