In director Tim Burton's sequel to his successful BATMAN (1989), the Caped Crusader (Michael Keaton) is pitted against the demented, ravenous Penguin (Danny DeVito), a pitiful, orphaned psychopathic freak who once went on a baby-killing spree, and a 'power' hungry capitalist villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken). As the two criminals plot to gain domination over Gotham City, BATMAN must plot to stop them. In the highly stylized BATMAN RETURNS--complete with dark, Gothic architecture and moody lighting--Batman (and his alter-ego Bruce Wayne) is thrown a third enemy, a terrible distraction: Catwoman (fearlessly and fabulously played by Michelle Pfeiffer). She is the slinky, sharp-clawed alter-ego of Shreck's secretary Selina. Batman must overcome his own dark past, and his present love entanglements, to rid Gotham of its evil enemies, this time with even more intricately designed sets and tongue-in-cheek humour, making BATMAN RETURNS an action-packed, darkly fun adventure.

Good film but ...

A Customer from Chippenham, 23rd January, 2009

The film was good, if a little cheesy (it is Batman after all) but if you have seen it before do not bother with the BluRay version. The transfer made no difference. I certainly wouldn't buy it.

"So much Yummier..."

This film really annoyed alot of people when it was released and I think it was because of it wasn't child friendly. But I adored it. I have been a Tim Burton fan for a long time and since I saw this film I truely believe that NOBODY can play Catwoman any better. i have seen the film so many times and didn't think it could change with blue-ray, but i was so wrong. The combination of the high definition and a large screen is pehenominal. I fell in love with the film all over again. There are many arguments about Batman and the fact that Chris Nolan's version is more realistic, but the truth is Tim Burton's version is more Batman than anyone elses. It incorperates the bizzare villains and plots that kept people reading the comics. True, Tim doesn't centre on Batman as much, but how many times can you tell his story before you no longer have sympathy for Bruce Wayne / Batman?? Without the villains there would be no story, so rent this out and see a MUCH darker and traditional view of Batman, stand in awe at Michelle Pfieffer's Catwoman and in disgust at Danny DeVito's Penguin. Examine the beauty of a true Gotham City which captures the spirit of Bob Kane.

A great superhero flick!

IvorB from , 29th April, 2009

This film is a true classic. The cast is to die for; Keaton, Pfeiffer, De Vito and (out of nowhere) Walken all deliver superb performances. Pfeiffer’s scene where she returns home from a fatal encounter with Max Shreck and transforms into Catwoman is amazing and pulled off with immense panache. Walken as the scumbag Shreck is mesmerising. The script is sharp and full of great, memorable lines. The film’s aesthetic is intentionally staged and stylised and this works really well in the context of a comic adaptation. Danny Elfman’s soundtrack delivers exactly the mood and atmosphere that’s needed. The action set pieces are not this film’s strong suit and are nowhere near the standard of Nolan’s Batman movies. The overall result is thoroughly engaging, entertaining and above the bar of what you would expect from a superhero flick.
