Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it out. The alien awakens, not in the best of moods, and proceeds to take over the identities of the scientists, one by one, body and all. Helicopter pilot MacCready (Kurt Russell) must lead the surviving men in discovering who among them is human and who is not and how they can destroy "the thing" before it takes them all and moves on to the heavily populated mainland and the rest of humanity. Rob Bottin supplies the awe-inspiring special effects of the creature in its many, ever-changing forms. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and hold up flawlessly over the passing years. But Carpenter does not rely solely on special effects, utilizing his spectacular cast, which includes Wilford Brimley and Richard Dysart, to create three dimensional characters enduring an unthinkable situation. The score from Ennio Morricone is understated, yet increases the tense mood tenfold. Shooting was difficult and done in below freezing conditions, but despite the discomfort the cast and crew produced a truly terrifying film that will stand the test of time. THE THING is surely one of Carpenter's definitive films and a true horror classic.

The things we took away

The thing is great. The sets are moody and claustrophobic. Kurt Russell makes s great reluctant hero. Ennio's score is excellent and Rob Bottin's creature effects are imaginative and haunting. The 'Making of' featured on this disc is fantastic, so too is the commentary for the film.

The Thing has always been one of my favourite.... be it sci-fi or horror.. or even both, with its original take on the original The Thing from another world or to be more precise an adaptation of the story 'Who goes there'. If it's your first time watching arguably Carpenter's greatest work (there are a few great ones... and a few duds), I can't think of another film that throws so much paranoia into the mix, with then cutting edge effects from SFX wiz Rob Bottin and the originality of the story. The score from Ennio Moricone is very fitting and very John Carpenter. It should also be noted that... to the best of my knowledge, The Thing is the only movie to be made completely by men... cast and crew.... save for the chess computer. The resolution is excellent and typically extremely sharp as is the sound. The features are pretty much lifted from the DVD... but is widely regarded as one of the best commentaries in the history of DVD. Recommended

Never seen this movie before and watched it as per a friends recommendation. And i must say i was not disappointed. Great visual effects for its time (love animatronics) and the suspense build up throughout the movie helps add to the atmosphere. The locations where great and acting what top notch

"Why don't we just wait here for a little while... see what happens..."

This film is amazing!! It's stood the test of time and still scares the socks of me. The perfect balance of Isolation, paranoia, claustrophobia and a seemingly unstoppable Monster make this Sci-Fi film a thrill ride which you won't forget in a hurry. John Carpenter creates an atmosphere worthy of his other classics and the special effects used, although are dated, look as effective as ever - even in Blue-Ray! If you have not seen this film and are a fan of horror - Please rent this as soon as you can, in no other film do the effects stay with as in this movie. It will have you grimacing as the realistic quality of the nightmarish transformations. There are loads of features to keep those so inclined happy too!! Not to be missed!!
