THE HULK, adapted by Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) from the Marvel comic book series, stars Eric Bana as Bruce Banner, the tormented scientist whose temper periodically transforms him into a raging green monster. Fellow scientist and Hulk-love-interest Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly), shares a strange connection with Banner--both have abstract childhood nightmares that hint at a shared dark past. The missing pieces of the puzzle are revealed when Banner's unstable, mad-scientist father David (Nick Nolte) appears out of the blue, followed by Betty's father Ross (Sam Elliot), a military cowboy. Banner is ultimately trying to understand what it is that makes his strange and unpredictable metamorphosis occur, while his outbursts distract him, leading him out into the streets of San Francisco, to the Golden Gate Bridge, and on a tour of the American west's national parks where he unleashes his anger in violent tantrums. A threat to the country that is treated like a natural disaster, the military is quick to respond, chasing the Hulk with helicopters, machine guns, and even heavy artillery, as he bounds away in mighty leaps, trying to escape. The CGI work used in creating the Hulk is funny and convincing, and the gorgeous landscape photography makes his presence all the more amazing. A vibrant colour scheme adds to the film's visual thrills, split-screen editing breaks up the slower scenes, and the music by composer Danny Elfman perfectly punctuates the contrast between the soft love story and wild action sequences. While parts of the film recall the introspection of FRANKENSTEIN, the outrageous crowd-pleasing monster-military chases hearken back to KING KONG and the GODZILLA movies.

It's ok but not great

Dern from from Swindon, 19th November, 2009

I like the Hulk movies but to begin with I expected too much from them. I absolutely love Marvel movies but taking this one too seriously was my mistake. Look at the movie as fun, view it through 'comic' eyes and you'll enjoy it. Try to watch it as a movie and you'll be frustrated, it is in essence a movie styled comic. When you watch it like this you'll understand why they produced it in the style it was. Overall it was entertaining, Friday night, nothing else on the television type movie. As it's been out for some time now most people have seen it. I can watch specific parts of the film for the action shots and the Hulk destroying things, which is always fun but not watch it from start to finish again.

The Hulk 2003 (best version so far)

A Customer from Leeds, 1st December, 2008

This version of the Hulk is the best version I seen so far and the newer version doesn’t compare. It’s got a story, drama, action and of cause save the girl. A Stan LEE classic.

More comic than drama

A Customer from Southampton, 23rd October, 2008

This is the so-called long awaited realse of The Incredible Hulk. They have waited this long to release a movie on the subject because the current generation possibly haven't seen or even heard of the TV series that used to Star a certain Mr. Farrino as the green Giant. Instead they have chosen a CGi Architype to take the place of human flesh on screen. This film disapointed me in several ways because it was not in keeping with the spirit of the comic and for those of us who have seen the original TV series it disapointed us for the lack of dramatic content. I used to have a lot of respect for Jennifer Connelly but she has hit rock bottom with this and her other release Dark Water. She was one of those actresses I was watching with interest over the years since her appearance in Labyrinth, Rocketteer and so forth. Abouth the only film she has held my vision in recently was Blood Diamond. I highlight this because the plot of this movie is so shallow it only gets its star rating because of the special effects. Acting of any kind in this movie will be deemed as reckless endangerment. All it depends on is for the actors to hit their mark and say their lines. Frankly I have seen better 5 minute cartoons than this.
