Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE) serves as director, writer, and producer of THE MIST, an adaptation of Stephen King's classic novella. After a vicious storm wreaks havoc in their small town in Maine, artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) heads out to the town supermarket for some much-needed supplies with his young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), and his neighbour, Norton (Andre Braugher), in tow. Their trip soon turns to terror when a menacing white mist settles in, leaving this group of locals and out-of-towners fighting for survival against an unknown, bloodthirsty enemy. When the local religious zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) begins to convince the group that the mist is punishment from God, Drayton and his cohorts realize that they may be trapped inside with an enemy just as dangerous as whatever is lurking outside.

Tension runs high in this tale as the trapped group faces difficult moral decisions. Should they stay and wait out the terror, or make a break for it and risk suffering a terrible fate? Is the eerie mist the will of God, an experiment from the local military base gone awry, or, maybe, a freak natural disaster? Without modern conveniences and the normal conventions and rules to guide them, the group is easily swayed by the loudest opinion. Will they save themselves at the expense of each other, or work as a team to save everyone? There is a decent amount of blood and gore for horror fans, some deadpan humour and just a hint of politics thrown in for good measure. Thomas Jane is a stoic leading man, but Frances Sternhagen and Toby Jones are more fun as unlikely heroes. Laurie Holden, Alexa Davalos, Bill Sadler and Jeffrey Demunn also star in this creepy tale.

Entertainment Weekly

Nifty, unusually spry... It's the good people of classic Kingsville, brought to life by an energized cast... show ought to scare the bejesus out of audiences

I've given this movie 1 star. Here's why:-

A Customer from London, 21st November, 2008

For weeks I'd been looking forward to seeing this movie on DVD having heard some good critics' reviews and recommendations. Unfortunately, what a disappointment. As with many of Stephen King's books translated to the screen (with the exception of The Green Mile, It, The Shining, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, etc), this was an uninspiring and most unoriginal movie. The idea of a 'mist' is firstly not an original horror theme, however the idea itself of an unknown 'mist' always does bestow a sense of uneasiness due to it's association with horror and a general psychological fear. With this movie, I was so looking forward to some elaborate and interesting storyline to the reasons behind the 'Mist'... but there was none. As soon as the CGI'd tentacles appeared and took away the 'Shermanator' (character from American Pie)... I felt totally let down. The CGI itself, from the creators of Pan's Labyrinth, was unexpectedly disappointing and many of the creatures were cliched and too 'cartoony'. This detracts from what could have been a more serious and gripping movie, and not a 'Jurassic Park-esque' adventure rather than a true Horror genre motion picture. This movie could have been so much better. There was no real dramatic anticipation, and even though the 'twist' at the finale of the movie was a good one, by this point you just didn't care. The storyline would go far better as a multi-million dollar blockbuster, with high-end special effects and good casting; but for a mid-budget horror movie it just didn't work. The best part of the movie.. was when it ended.

Horror with a sad twist...

A Customer from Whitby, 29th November, 2008

Wasnt sure what to expect from this film as seemed to start off very slowly, however once underway was well impressed 90% of the film is done in one place and at times this seemed slightly too long winded but overall the special effects of the creatures where very good indeed and some quite gruesome indeed ,i enjoyed this film but thought the ending was awful,,almost made you want to cry but if you like scifi/horror of the milder kind then this is the film for you ,just get the tissues ready!

Good

Charlie2000 from , 21st June, 2009

This looks good on Blu-ray. The story is okay, but there is nothing at all original about what is in the mist. The effects are mostly good, except near the start when some CGI doesn't look particulalry convincing. The ending is pretty downbeat, which is good for a horror film and not something you usually get in a Hollywood film! However, I did think it dragged in places, and was surprised that Frank Darabont had used some of the currently fashionable (but pointless, in my view) deliberately jerky hand-held camerawork, with sudden and small (and yes, pointless!) zoom ins. Good, but maybe some more imagaination would have come in handy here.

A good surprise!

TomBombFR from , 19th June, 2009

I didn't know anything about the movie but it was recommended to me so I gave it a go. The movie is rather low-budget and it shows on screen, but it doens't stop it from being a gripping movie that will keep you stressed, on the nerves and oppressed all the way through it. Franck Darabont is a great director, and he shows it again by delivering a movie with a good rythm, good filming, overall very good quality. Still not disappointed by him.
