Subtitles might have helped......only rent this if you understand French.

There ARE subtitles

MichaelKenward from , 27th October, 2009

I don't know about the DVD players used by the other viewers. Seeing their reviews I checked on my PC to see if there are subtitles. They are there. There is just no on-screen setting to turn them on and off in the usual way. If you consult the manual of your DVD player you should find a reference to a button on the remote control that will turn subtitles on and off. It worked here.

As to the film, it is a strange pair of parallel stories, but there is a connection. The husband is from a boat building family. This is his milieu. It has shaped him. His wife comes to terms with this as the 'action' progresses.

The photography would not work in colour. Much of it is a lovingly constructed sequence of 'stills'.

Quiz fans might like to count the number of cats with walk-on parts.

Parlez vous Francais?

A Customer from Newhaven, 13th October, 2009

I'm sure this is a good film but the Lovefiln description is misleading! The film is NOT subtitled, the only sub-titles on are on an extra. My French is so poor, I returned the DVD without watching it for more than a couple of minutes, hence one star (painful).

A Curio (with subtitles)

Kevin Lloyd from London, 30th December, 2009

This very early Agnes Varda is, it has to be said, a bit dull and a rather strange combination of portentous dialogue between a couple set against some quotidian events in a French fishing village. Didn't really hold my attention although it has some nice touches and some impressive walk on parts for cats. Cleo (de 5 a 7) is a much better bet.

French film with NO subtitles

Dungbeetle from , 27th February, 2010

Atmospheric black and white French film with a very young Phillippe Noiret showing his future prowess as an actor. It is well directed and photographed within the bleak scenery of a coastal fishing village. My French is not good enough to catch the nuances but I managed to follow the basic plot.
