Ruined by laughter

A Customer from Glasgow, 18th September, 2007

This was a great series when the BBC showed it without the canned laughter. Unfortunately this is the American version where the canned laughter is turned on at the slightest opportunity.

Classic TV

My fav US comedy, mixture of light and dark comedy, with Alan Alda becoming a true genius.

Not Just another hospital drama!

A Customer from Winchester, England, 14th April, 2006

Considering this was made, I think, in the early 70s the humour and perhaps more depressingly, the setting, is remarkably fresh. The bite of the series is contrasts. The contrasts between the good done in the MASH versus the campaign that wages a few miles away that provides them with their work. The constant stream of wounded being patched up by overworked and tired surgeons is again contrasted against the humour in and out of the operating theatre. The dark humour around the operating table is different to the jokes that are play on the cast members, sometimes mercilessly but always deserving. The characters are also opposing, with the laid back but professional Hawkeye (Alan Alda) to the bungling by sympathetic commander, Henry Blake and the over the top gungho but incompetent Frank Burns. But ignore the heavy undertones just laugh your socks off at the antics that these looney doctors get up to, its a good prelude to Scrubs!

MASH improves with age

A Customer from West Sussex, England, 31st March, 2006

Having watched the series when it was on television years ago, I did wonder how it would stand the test of time. The first series was great. All the characters believable with fun and pathos. The stories good and at the end of each episode I couldn't wait to see the next one. Sometimes second series do not measure up but the second series of MASH was just as good. As ever Hawkeye (played by Alan Alda dominates, but all the characters are well played. Special mention for Radar, Klinger and Colonel Blake. Some episodes had me laughing out loud and others brought tears to my eyes. Well worth watching again....and again
