Provides a swift succession of set pieces from Dickens' novel, enlivened by the performances of Plummer as a grasping rogue and Courtney as his lugubrious clerk.

Good performance by Jamie Bell

Stepone from Hertfordshire, 8th December, 2003

Another great performance by Jamie Bell after Billy Elliot. His performance as Smike has brought life to this great story.

Charlie Hunnam is perfect as Nicholas Nickleby. But not as good a performacne as Nathan in Queer as Folks.

A Dickens of a good movie!

Chris C from Milton Keynes, England, 12th January, 2004

Nickleby' is quintessential Dickens in its mixture of sentiment and satire, its finely drawn characters and caricatures, its clear cut delineation of good and evil, hero and villain, its melodramatic and coincidence-ridden plotting, and its championing of the downtrodden underclass of 19th Century England. Like many of Dickens' protagonists, Nicholas is a young man who is forced by circumstances (in this case the death of his father) to leave the comfort and security of his home and family and to venture forth to make his way in the world. On his journey he meets many vivid and colorful characters, all of whom reveal to him both the goodness and the cruelty inherent in human nature. These picaresque tales almost always end up with the hero a bit wiser and less na?ve for his experiences - but more committed than ever to righting wrongs and seeking justice for those less able to do so on their own. And `Nicholas Nickleby' is no exception.

With a Huge cast including Christopher Plummer as Ralph Nickleby, Anne Hathaway as Madeline Bray, Jim Broadbent as Mr. Wackford Squeers and Juliet Stevenson as Mrs. Squeers to name a few. this is a film that will touch the hearts of young and old.

Chocolate box Dickens

Ebenezer Scrooge from Kent, 21st March, 2005

Watchable adaptation.. particularly if you have never seen better or just want a taster of the story. Appears that it may have been made for the American market.. pretty scenery, pretty music, pretty Nicholas.. Nice cameo from Tom Courtenay. Squeers family more like caricatures than real people, Juliet Stevenson's Mrs Squeers more like the character from 'Chicken Run' who decides on the chicken pie production!!!

Hackneyed, woeful, lamentable BUT...

dafadddu from the north will rise again, 27th April, 2004

sterling enjoyable performances, as you'd expect, from the likes of Tom Courtenay, Tim Spall and Jim Broadbent. Charlie Humman, on this performance, is no actor; he might look pretty but he mangles and misdelivers his words in a Nathanesque and therefore uncredible accent. Bell is a little better as he hams at playing at Smike, in this remaindered chocolate box of a stodgy spoilt film. And the music's pretty blandly annoying too.

Avoid like smallpox

Tracy Borman from Surrey, England, 5th November, 2007

Utter turd. Save 120 minutes of your life and do not rent this film. To describe it as pants would be to do a disservice to undergarments the world over.

some mis-cast actors, especially Barry Humphries, sounding just like a worn-out Dame Edna!
