The Showtime Original Series The Borgias is the sordid saga of one of the most remarkable and legendary families in history. Set in 15th century Italy at the height of the Renaissance, The Borgias chronicles the corrupt rise of patriarch Rodrigo Borgia (Jeremy Irons) to the papacy, where he proceeds to commit every sin in the book to amass and retain power, influence and enormous wealth for himself and his family. The unbounded audacity of this original crime family went on to inspire Machiavelli's The Prince and Mario Puzo's The Godfather.

Brilliant - definitely worth the watch. I didn't find myself bored at all. It could have been a little longer, but i look forward to the next series.

Great history lesson ?

A Customer from , 10th May, 2012

Just up my street. A history lesson with a bit of bite. (How accurate it is I don't know) Acting is very good and the story flows at a decent pace. Full of characters you enjoy for their ability to be so sneaky. Some of the back drops are excellent but some others look as if the money was getting tight. Some very attractive women as a bonus.

Taken on face value!

JonathanR from , 15th April, 2012

I was initially perturbed by dis-belief in this 15th century drama. Could a pope, his family and cardinals have behaved in such a non-godlike way? After subconsciously deciding to take it on face value I have become enthralled in the drama of the Borgias family and the politics of 'Italy' and Europe at this time. Jeremy Irons (with his grating voice) is great as expected playing Pope but the mainly British supporting cast is also good, particularly Holliday Grainger as Lucrezia. I also love Michel Muller's barbarian portrayal of King Charles VIII of France. It is filmed in Hungary with some excellent sets but I did find some of the dis-membered bodies in the battle scenes a bit gruesome!

Combines accurate historical narrative with gripping drama. This is addictive stuff, I can't wait for season two to become available.

Think 'Dynasty' in late 15th century Italy, but with a good dose of history. Jeremy Irons is superb. Wonderful opening titles and music - I cannot wait for another series!
