Ace Ventura - Pet Detective is the best there is. In fact he's the only one there is. He finds himself on the case of a lifetime when he is asked to find a kidnapped dolphin, the mascot of the Miami Dolphins Football Team.

Radio Times

Doctor Dolittle meets The Crying Game in this smash-hit comedy that made Jim Carrey an overnight sensation. The rubber-faced star plays a bumbling, Hawaiian-shirted detective hired to find the kidnapped dolphin mascot of the Miami Dolphins football team in this fast and furious farce. Your reaction to the film will largely depend on whether you find Carrey's distinctive style of extremely physical comedy — often compared to that of Jerry Lewis — stupidly hilarious or downright annoying. Likely to appeal mainly to the Wayne's World brigade, Ace Ventura is directed with anarchic energy and quirky imagination by Tom Shadyac, who also brought his magic touch to Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor and reteamed with Carrey for the comedy Liar Liar. Carrey's long-suffering co-stars Courteney Cox (from Friends) and Sean Young (in surely one of her most bizarre screen roles) had the good sense not to reappear in the lamentably unfunny sequel When Nature Calls.

Jim Carrey at his best.

Mazzy1969 from West Glamorgan, 12th November, 2004

This film is the best, it is entertainment for everyone young and old.

One of my favourites, I laughed so much I nearly cried, and my 9 year old loves it too.

Ace adores Animals!

Charles Brickley from Andover, Hampshire England, 6th January, 2010

This is Jim Carrey at his peak in a comedy that is a mixture of slapstick, smart remarks, good special effects and a very slick script. Made at about the same time as Dumb & Dumber and The Mask, this is my favourite of the trio as Ace comes over as an almost believable character. With a plausible plot in which all the cast contribute, including the furry and feathered members, this mystery of a missing mammal mascot proceeds at a very fast pace. Most of the script could be termed family friendly as long as your family do not adopt some of Carrey's zanier witticisms. It is full of gags and double entendres and is worth a second or even triple screening. Worth the rental as it was easy on the brain and gave me a good laugh or several.

Side Splitting Laughs

BCLSLM from Nottinghamshire, 19th June, 2006

I really liked this one as it started off with laughs from the very start.

He does seem to get on everyones nerves, but the end result is surprising.

The way he does things is really funny to say the least. I think they got the right guy to play the main character in the movie. Fantastic to watch from start to finish

Ace Ventura - Pet Detective

CJH from , 2nd October, 2009

Poor generally. True I was working at the same time, but Jim Carrey's antics, though hugely talented, don't last long on me. It became rather... Austin Powers-esk. I didn't like him and so the comedy became rather sour by the end. And the 'song' over the end credits was just atrocious!

WARNING - Dangerous levels of laughter could be reached

Mickey Mouse from Dorset, England, 11th April, 2009

Jim Carey is an absolute comedy legend, and although he's done loads of great movies, I think it has to be his first big starring role in Ace Ventura that is his best work to date. I absolutely love this film, no matter how many times I watch it, it has me in stitches everytime. Ace Ventura 2 is probably my favourite comedy movie ever, but this first film is still a classic - hilarious from the very first memorable scene where Ace delivers a package to an unscrupulous dog-napper. And you thought Royal Mail were bad?! No-one has ever captured physical comedy so perfectly as Mr Carey and again I think he shows this off best in the Ace movies over any other he's done. It's completely riddled with laugh out loud moments and classic one-liners. Comedy doesn't really get much more ridiculous than this, so if you're not really into crazy, over the top slapstick humour then you should definitely still watch it - Carey is a comic genius and irresistably funny to watch! If you have a sense of humour, you simply must find this funny. If not, then seek your local GP. And when you've seen this, watch the sequel - it's even better.
