One day, in a destitute and drunken state, Henchard sells his wife and daughter to a sailor at a county fair. Haunted by the memory of this betrayal, the itinerant farmhand decides to change his ways and in the process becomes a respectable, prosperous man. Twenty years later, his wife and daughter reappear on his doorstep, offering Henchard the choice of redemption or a further descent into the web of deceit and betrayal.

I really enjoyed this...

A Customer from Dorset, England, 28th February, 2005

I rented this not knowing what it was about at all but I love period drama and Ciaran Hinds so that decided it! Throughly enjoyable, the plot is extremely good (thanks to Thomas Hardy of course) and is almost played out scene for scene with the original book. All performances excellent (esp Ciaran Hinds) and it really captures the feel of the times. I would definitely recommend it to all!

Classic ,in every sense.

Fabulous acting From Hinds and May however the dire Scottish accent of another, leaves a lot to be desired.

All is forgiven by the superb cast, acting and emotional depth of the characters, which make this production a definate must see.

The depth to which Hinds character plummets to is only surpassed by the honour and honesty of those closest to him. He test them again and again yet it is alway's he, who is found wanting.

Stunning, simply stunning.

This was a very worth adaptation of the novel by Thomas Hardy.

Cieran Hinds especially was superb as Michael Henchard, who you loathe one minute, and the next he breaks your heart. If you like Thomas Hardy, or period dramas, I advise you give this one a go. Although be warned, as it was originally a tv miniseries, it is very long.

Wonderful script, acting and direction, one of my all-time favourites!

Classic, of a classic!

Yep!... I shed a tear at the end of this one, and I'm a geezer! In the region of 3 hours worth of costumed drama and it flew by. I can't really fault this pic and its alot better than another Hardy adaption, I recently viewed, Far From The Madding Crowd (Nigel Terry). Go on guys, you know you want to!

Can be heavy going in places. Bleak, and no upliftment. A movie of the times, I suppose

Rambling

A Customer from Hillingdon, England, 30th December, 2009

Period drama. A rambling tale of the life of a man and his daughter. 19th century values nicely explored. One can see why cars had to be invented with all the walking people had to do then.

I thought the two discs were well acted and the story was compelling and kept you interested in the outcome. I enjoyed it and would recommend to those period dramatics out there!

Enjoyed by the whole family

A Customer from Weald, 21st October, 2009

Excellent period piece. Good acting, appealing from ages 12 upwards. We were all so engrossed we watched the whole film in one sitting - it is a loooong movie.
