Lowbrow buffoonery hit commercial highs with 1994's DUMB AND DUMBER. When best friends and aspiring pet groomers Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey, in a star-making role) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) get fired, Lloyd convinces Harry to travel to Colorado to search for his dream woman-Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly). Little does Lloyd know that Mary's in Aspen trying to locate her kidnapped husband. Soon the dim-witted pair have gotten mixed up in the crime, and their wacky exploits are leading the FBI straight to the crooks.

The Farrelly Brothers are at the peak of their twisted craft with this gut-busting comedy. But between such gross-out gags as Hary's laxative overdose and Lloyd's deliriously over-the-top dream sequence, it's really the chemistry between Carrey and Daniels-and the charming naivetE of these two dunces-that lend the film a disarming sweetness.

Radio Times

With Jim Carrey, there are no half measures. So you'll either love this as one of Carrey's finest moments or loathe it as a perfect example of mind-numbing Hollywood cinema. However, even the harshest critic will find it hard to suppress at least a couple of chuckles during this cheerfully moronic mix of slapstick, sight gags and toilet humour. Carrey and Jeff Daniels play two of the world's stupidest people who set off on a chaotic road trip when they try to return Lauren Holly's missing briefcase. Disengage the brain and enjoy.

"Outstanding Comedy"

bomber from Neath Port-talbot, 19th October, 2003

This has to be one of the best comedies of the last decade; Jim Carrey plays this character spot on, and I think it's one of the best films he has made.
Each time you watch it, it is just as funny, and never gets boring - just good all round comedy!!! This film doesn't come close to the sequel, so don't judge it on that, too.

The Farrelly's Best

Farah from London, 3rd June, 2004

It's not mature or clever, but the Farrelly's first (and best) outing is incredibly funny. The plot, a thinly-veiled cover for allowing Carrey and Bridges as many fart & piss jokes as possible, is that Lloyd Christmas (Carrey), a limo driver, falls in love with a woman, Mary Swanson (Holly) he drives to the airport. As he leaves, he sees her accidentally (or so he thinks) leave her suitcase in the airport. Being the hero that he is, he decides to follow her to Aspen, California (or is it in France?), to return the suitcase to her. He goes home to his friend Harry Dunn (Daniels), who just lost his job as a.. dog transporter? and convinces him to go on the road trip with him. So ensues many mishaps, arguments and the death of a man. But don't worry, that doesn't darken the tone in the lightest, in fact, it's quite funny. You may feel like it's wrong to laugh (out very loud) at the toilet humour on show here, but go ahead, it's not frequent that a movie lives up to it's moronic title.
The Farrellys have tried, and failed, even with their bigger hit 'There's Something About Mary' to top this. How they managed to get a great comedic performance from typically, a dramatic actor, Jeff Daniels, I'll never know. This was also the movie that catapulted Jim Carrey into stardom, before 'Ace Ventura' and 'The Mask'. A comedic gem.

Still Dumb Still Dumber

Starguitar from , 23rd July, 2010

I must have seen this film a million times and have to say it is still the best laugh out loud comedy I have ever seen. The reason it works so well for the Farrelly Bros. is not just the outrageous Jim Carey but the unlikely comedy of Jeff Daniels who puts in an absolute fantastic performance. Not well known for comedy films he certainly steals the show here (in particular the toilet scene). In essence the movie has an overall message of friendship and of course stupidity mixed in with a road trip. If you rent or buy this title in Blu-Ray be sure to check out the additional scenes as there is a ton of them well worth the watch. I dare anyone to see this and try not laugh...impossible.

Stupid but very funny

Bassman71 from , 11th January, 2010

Chaffeur falls in love with his client, tries to give back her briefcase which she 'forgot', travels to Aspen with friend, mayhem. I know a lot of people either love or hate Jim Carrey but this is still a really funny film 15 years on. It's stupid, gross & has some really good memorable comedy moments throughout with the chilli eating scene my personal favourite.

One for the boys. Of all ages

A Customer from Birmingham, 17th November, 2009

We are a predominantly female household so I rented this for the boys (one teenage, one wishes-he-still-was) as they are fed up with my lame girly choices (apparently). Granny hated it - thought it was crude and unsubtle: yup, just what you expect from a Jim Carrey movie. Silly wig, silly voice, silly plot - tick, they are all there. Some clever lines, but they get lost in his comedy teeth. The boys thought it was wonderful and bonded over it: my daughter (and her visiting friend) thought it was totally lacking in princesses and there was no glamour or love. They got that one right. Actually, from expecting an excrutiating evening of laddishness where I would have to keep finding excuses to leave the room for my sanity (I had prepared the cat to be sent out of the house and brought back in again on at least three occasions without letting on), I was surprised that I could sit through it all and even find the odd moment amusing. Was it high art? No - but that's not why you watch it. Did it amuse, entertain, pass the time, provide days of one-liners to swap with the other early teens (or 40-something wannabes) in your life? Yes. On that basis, I'd recommend it.
