Following his impressive 1996 debut, Khamoshi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali confirmed his potential with this sprawling romantic musical comedy. Aishwarya Rai stars as the headstrong daughter of palace singer Vikram Gokhale, who is married off to lawyer Ajay Devgan despite her love for hedonistic musician Salman Khan. However, when her husband discovers the truth, he heads for Italy to deliver his bride to his rival. Packed with colourful ceremonials and shuttling between Europe and Rajasthan, this escapist masala is greatly enhanced by Anil Mehta's glossy photography and Mehboob and Ismail Darbar's lively songs. But the pacing is suspect and Bhansali overdoes the clichés.
