Loosely based on a story by cyber-pioneer William Gibson, this futuristic thriller centres on a the title character played by Keanu Reeves, a courier who uploads vital data straight into his hard-drive of a brain for storage and safe transport. Johnny has given up brainspace that his childhood memories occupied in order to save space for his chosen profession. He wants to pull one last job before he retires, and the one he gets is particularly perilous. He's got 48 hours to transport a large load of data from Beijing to the United States--and some futuristic samurai don't want him to make it to his destination! The directorial debut of conceptual artist Robert Longo is full of arresting visuals painting a bleak, yet eye-popping, vision of the future.

Radio Times

Director Robert Longo's turgid sci-fi thriller, based on William Gibson's cyberpunk short story, is cyber junk. Keanu Reeves sleepwalks through the title role as a 21st-century hi-tech messenger who carries top-secret information thanks to a computer chip in his brain allied to bio-enhanced memory cells. Unfortunately, his latest employers have overloaded his cranial capacity to such an extent that his head will explode unless he downloads fast. Empty, flashy and incredibly dull, Longo's unpleasant movie fails to generate any suspense and, worse still, is lamely tarted up with incomprehensible surf-cowboy jargon, gratuitous violence and second-rate special effects.

An acceptable film

Gladfan from , 22nd July, 2004

Of all the films i have seen this rates as moderate. The story is somewhat funny, the effects cost more than a fiver but I am sorry to say that Keanu can and has done better than this. The priest however makes this movie watchable just for its comedy value, the man is so camp and plays the role so well. The movie is also a summer job for the music industry with Henry Rollins (rollins band) and rapper friends in tow.
On the whole as i say its medle of the road in all aspects. Only see this if you are a fan of Keanu and need to tick it of the movie list, otherwise its one to avoid.

Nice idea, shame about the film.

Silant from from Sheffield, England, 16th March, 2008

I would try and say something positive about this film, but i am at a loss of what to say about it. I first read the short story it is based on a few years ago, and it was one of the most unique ideas i had read for a long time, but when i saw this film, i was appalled at the stupidity of it. Yes, the author of the short story wrote the script, but other than that i don't know of his involvement with the film. I would like to point out many inaccuracies between the short story and the film, but it is not the place to do so, other than there is much more there than the film gives, and because of this it is a shallow and weak film. If I were to recommend this film, i would advise the short story be read first, or watch it out of morbid curiosity otherwise, it is one to be missed.

Actually, its not bad

blunderwood from East Sussex, 18th June, 2004

As a pre cursor to the Matrix this is an interesting exercise for Keanu Reeves, the man who's played Neo and the Buddha in his brief career so far. Based on the short story by William Gibson, inventor of cyberpunk, this film expands the general idea into a full length movie and it does so rather well.

Its stylish, in a way which does seem a tad dated already but nevertheless remains not so distant futuristic and an interesting commentary on present day technology, the gap between the haves and have nots, corporate world domination etc etc.

It lacks a few of the more subtle touches of Gibson's writings and makes me slightly relieved that Neuromancer has yet to be made.

But it also has a kooky appearance by Dolph Lundgren, Henry Rollins and Ice T.

The future's bright.

Love this film!

DiddyNeo from , 27th February, 2010

You know what, this is a terrible film, but there is something endearing about it, and I love it. I'll always watch it if its on one of the TV channels. I know the plot backwards and the ending is perfectly silly, but it's always worth a late night viewing ~ get a bag of popcorn, throw off your shoes and kick back, there's worse things to watch, and Keanu is as Keanu does ... I guess he was practising for Matrix.

You won't get that wasted time back again

A Customer from Sutton, 10th June, 2009

A truly apalling film. If you thought Reeves was wooden in other films this is like running through a forest and hitting every tree. If you thought Highlander 2 and Robocop 3 were atrocious then this film breaks new ground. Henry Rollins' cameo is interesting but only if you have heard of him. Apart from that avoid at all costs...
