Slow but good

MrMiguel from , 30th August, 2010

This film is a black and white, French escape film. A lot of people seem to find it too slow but i think the pace goes with the plot: escaping from a prison cell is made by little steps and sometimes, you have to wait a long time to move onto the next one.

This film escapes me

russio from , 12th February, 2010

Didn't do much for me I have to say. At times the odd thing happened that then cropped up many years later in other prison movies. I am sure this must have seemed farily powerful in its day and I do not wish to denigrate the struggles depicted within the movie but at the same time there was little to suggest why this enjoys the critical reputation it does. Perhaps it is the astonishing natural light that gives all Italian neo-realist pictures that extra look of quality?

Gripping film

A Customer from Innerleithen, 25th October, 2009

This film is an example of how a low-budget, black and white film made over 50 years ago can be uttery gripping and keep one hooked by the tension created by clever direction. Silence, as opposed to the incessant background music we now get in films and TV, is used to enhance the suspense and attune the viewer to the main characters acute attention to sounds as a key to what is happening outside his prison cell.

Escape movie with a difference

Zamy from , 25th August, 2009

In a career spanning 50 years Robert Bresson completed only 13 films. Never mind, his work will last long after most Hollywood blockbusters have disappeared from view. This is film as art and Bresson was an artist, exercising the closest control over all elements of the film-making process. Using a minimalist style in cinematography, sound and unique actor/models for characters his films have a very special quality. Although never mainstream in his appeal, this ultimate 'auteur' rewards the committed viewer with an enriching, almost spiritual experience. This release has the added bonus of a 1983 German documentary made at the Cannes Film Festival where Bresson won an award for his final film 'L'Argent'. This provides some insight into this most private of directors and includes interviews with Tarkovsky, Louis Malle and Paul Shrader. So this is a very good dvd to start with if you are considering renting films from this director. I will certainly be adding more of them to my rental list.
