The Grandaddy of Escape films

I think you have to be carefull with prison escape films, if its to unrealistic it doesn't wash, but then if it was too easy then everybody would be breaking out! Empire quote 'One for all Shawshank fans everywhere' and to be true it kind of is. The slow pace, the working of other inmates and guards, a spanner thrown in the works near the time of the break out is all there as with Shawshank, but lets remember which came first!! It is based around WW2 and a French resistance fighter is locked up in a prison which is really a housing for them before the death penalty. He knows this and appreciates the fact he has to get out, even though past attempts have been unsuccessful. Its all quite tense and nervy and the preperation and planning is lengthy but with good story telling. It can feel a little dated especially with some of the procedures used to escape, (I mean the guards are either thick or blind!!) but remeber the year it was made and dont forget it is based on a TRUE STORY!! Overall, very good Sunday afternoon fodder that shouldn't be missed.
