Ten-year old orphan Patrick Dennis has come to live with his nearest relative and in the high times ahead, he's not going to believe his luck. Nor will you, because Patrick's relation is played by one of Hollywood's greatest dames. Auntie Mame brings to bubbly life the mayhem Mame and her cronies create while guiding Patrick's fortunes. "Life is a banquet," Mame says, "and most poor suckers are starving to death!" With wit, style and a seasoned cast to dish humor and heart with gusto, Auntie Mame is a full course meal of entertainment magic.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A rather unsatisfactory star revue from a book and play later turned into a musical, Mame (qv). A few splendid moments, otherwise rather dull and irritating.

Comedy tour-de-force for Rosalind Russell

A Customer from Aussie in Scotland, 24th February, 2006

This movie is not Drama (as listed) but my favourite comedy of all time. The hilarious screenplay by Comden and Green was adapted from their play adaptation of the book. After running for years on Broadway, Roz Russell then had every look, vocal inflection and nuance of this character honed. Put the two together.... I still remember the night as a teenager when I first saw this movie when I was laughing out loud all the way through. I saw a playing of the film on TV (after its release on DVD in the States), when it had the look of a film after restoration. Now available here,it promises to be a great quality DVD.
