An unexciting performance

Hugh Craig from Leicester UK, 28th May, 2004

I have seen better performances from the Kirov and, perhaps surprisingly, the American Ballet Theatre which I videoed from a BBC2 broadcast introduced by Debora Bull.

A lavish production...

A Customer from Buckhurst Hill, Essex, 30th September, 2007

...but for me it seemed to be almost a pantomime. Excellent principal dancers - and corps de ballet - although the latter's 'set pieces' tend to break up the continuity and add little to the drama. (Am I alone in thinking that at times their costumes irrelevant in Acts 2 and 3?) Not the most exciting viewing but perhaps we are spoiled with modern camera techniques which can enhance the performances and hold our attention - we've come a long way since 1989.

le corsaire kirov ballet 1989

lesley from edinburgh, 7th February, 2010

I I give this 4 stars at least. Surprised at the low stars from other reviewers. This is a classic for ballet lovers - Assylmuratova c 27 years - coming into her prime - and Yelena Pankova ( c20 yrs) almost upstaging her. It's a live performance from the kirov/ mariinsky stage ( which is the most beautiful theatre I have ever been in) and the whole production is wonderful - it's a daft story but the dancers believe it and also work with the humour. This is a really wonderful DVD with dancers who are now legendary but were very young and mainly unknown when this was filmed. Wonderful costumes, glorious music and exquisite Petipa choreography. Simply cannot recommend this enough. If you love ballet - buy this and you will enjoy.
