Reminiscent of SOME LIKE IT HOT, VICTOR VICTORIA and TOOTSIE, CONNIE AND CARLA is a musical comedy in drag written by and co-starring Nia Vardalos of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. Best friends since their school days, Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) are airport lounge singers with dreams of someday making it big on the cabaret circuit. Past their prime and going nowhere in their hometown of Chicago, their break comes when they accidentally witness a mob murder, flee to L.A., and disguise themselves in drag. They dazzle the drag community with their singing talent and their suspiciously authentic feminine figures. Soon they become one of the hottest nightclub shows around with a larger-than-life secret upon which their fame depends. Their struggle to keep their secret becomes even more difficult when Connie meets Jeff (David Duchovny), the straight brother of one of her drag friends (Stephen Spinella), and begins to fall in love. A complicated affair ensues with Jeff believing he is falling for a man in drag and Connie struggling to keep her true identity hidden in a series of wacky mix-ups and close calls. Vardalos and Collette sing and dance in a variety of campy numbers, featuring classic show tunes from EVITA, CABARET, and GYPSY.

Radio Times

Writer Nia Vardalos's insipid follow up to 2002's surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding has her and Toni Collette playing wannabe singers who decide to disguise themselves as performers in a West Hollywood drag club after accidentally witnessing a Mob murder. Weakly plotted gender-confusion comedy follows as Connie (Vardalos) falls for a drag queen's straight brother (a virtually charm-free David Duchovny) who doesn't realise that she's a woman. There's the odd laugh to be had from the duo's dodgy stage routines, but Connie and Carla struggles helplessly with a woefully underwritten script and a central pairing lacking the fizzy personalities essential for this kind of silly fluff to work.

CHIN UP, BOOBS OUT- IT'S SHOWTIME!!!

hunkydomste from from Liverpool, 17th September, 2008

I just can't help but love and admire Toni Collette. I thought she was ace when I saw her in Muriel's Wedding for the first time- and look at her now! She is without doubt one of the most versatile, talented actresses around- and yet it is sooo refreshing to see her in this fabulously light hearted comedy romp, together with 'My... Greek Wedding's Nia Vardos. In a nutshell, it's a hoot. And camper than a pink Christmas tree fairy in a row of tents. Connie and Carla are a talented, yet underrated duo, bringing show tunes to those who don't 'get them'. After witnessing a crime, they go on the run and end up hiding in the disguise of drag queens. Show tune singing drag queens that is. (Women pretending to be men pretending to be women, in other words.) The fact that Connie and Carla can sing and not just mime soon brings in more and more punters and they become quite the phenomenon. Cue a handsome complication in the shape of David Duchovny.... As you expect, the film is stacked from wig to stiletto with one-liners and gags, but there is a lot of uplifting self belief encouragement here as wel. And Debbie Reynolds. Doubtful about the whole show tunes thing? Take it from me as someone who has been frowned upon in the past for not knowing his South Pacific from his Other Musicals: You'll find yourself humming along and being swept up in it as easily as the Russian gangster chasing Connie and Carla- it's all just part of the film's charm rather than the centre piece. A perfect cheer me up movie that will have you smiling, laughing and feeling warm and fuzzy every time. SEE THIS IF YOU LIKED * SOME LIKE IT HOT * PRISCILLA * THE BIRDCAGE

They don't make 'em like this any more

Rehan from , 11th August, 2005

... or at least, my God, one wishes they didn't. There isn't a cliché left unturned in this embarrassingly mawkish drivel. To see an actress of the calibre of Toni Collette in this nonsense is nothing short of disturbing.

This is fantasy fairy-tale (yes, pun intended) taken to its utmost extreme of improbability. Sentimental twaddle ... oh, and guess what? In this film that supposedly advocates tolerance and acceptance (with all the subtlety of lead), the climactic clinch is between -- a straight man and woman. So everything's all right, then.

This abysmal film would have seemed dated in the early 80s: that it's made more recently is gobsmacking.

My Big Fat Greek Does Drag

Pete Shuttleworth from Hemel Hempstead, Herts., 15th November, 2004

After a somewhat forced premise of having to become anonymous and untraceable the film's central characters,Connie and Carla, soon discover that their singing talents and ponchant for high camp are ideally suited to the stage of a Californian drag show. There are some VERY funny moments - most due to the reversal of sexual stereotypes and the situations Connie and Carla get into - and the movie cracks on at a pace. The musical numbers are treated with due reverence and I finished the film wanting to watch it all over again.

Just laugh so much

KalvinChapman from , 15th August, 2009

This is one of those films that you love for life or just don't get it. More of a film that will suit gay men than straight men. It was a very soft and fluffy film - but this film is the kind of film that perpetuate sthe phrase 'Lol' because you will just laugh out loud for the whole film. Toni Collette is superb and is complemented by writer Nia Vardalo. It was as if the film was written just for them rather than being written and then actors hired. If you liked Muriel's wedding, or My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you will love this. It's a film to watch when on your own or with someone else, a film for when you need cheering up and a film for when you're having a good laugh with friends. It has everything, so watch it!!

Connie and Carla - Perfect for your inner 13 year old.

A Customer from LONDON, 19th February, 2009

This film is a bit daft but its light hearted and amusing , it doesn't matter that the plot is far fetched and predictable because you know what your going to get.... glittery eyes and lashes ,soppy torch songs, a feast of stereotyped drag queens , heartache and a happy ending. perfect for a miserable Sunday when you want a naughty treat with absolutely no challenge. Needs maltesers and tea for the full benefit
