What a Mess

The subject of the right-wing political and media campaign to undermine and finally impeach President Clinton is rich and racy. But over and over again this jumbled film fails to explain any of the who, where and when - and so never gets near the why and the what-for. Important characters appear in the story unannounced, and are given no context or history; whereas minor characters are introduced with a mightly flourish, and never appear again. The use of ill-chosen feature film and TV drama clips to 'dramatise' the events adds further to confusion, as does the ceaseless doomy music which frequently renders inaudible Morgan Freemen's portentous and often muddy commentary. When I saw the 20th Century Fox logo at the beginning of this pro-Clinton documentary, I thought it was rather ironic that noted Clinton-basher Rupert Murdoch was the film's distributor. However, the film is so dire, it may have been issued by Fox as a Clinton spoiler.
