In 2020, a group of astronauts headed by Luke Graham (Don Cheadle) set out to be the first humans on Mars. After they've landed, they investigate a strange noise near an unusual rock formation, and an unpredicted storm conjures up a living tunnel of sand that wipes out everyone except Graham. His pals back on a space station near Earth spring to his rescue despite the concern of their stodgy Russian captain (Peter Outerbridge) that in the year it will take to reach him, Graham will likely die. Nonetheless, they have to try it. Manning the spacecraft is Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise), a shaky but brilliant space cadet mourning the death of his wife (Kim Delaney); newcomer Phil (Jerry O'Connell); and married astronauts Woody (Tim Robbins) and Terri (Connie Nielsen). After various catastrophic setbacks, they make it to Mars in time to discover some shocking secrets, including the very origin of life in the universe. Highlighted by staggering special effects, this ambitious Brian De Palma film straddles the void between Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and Cameron's THE ABYSS, with imaginative results. The music is by Ennio Morricone.

Radio Times

Barely adequate sci-fi programmer about the first American astronauts to land on Mars, only to face a challenge from a sun-activated, mechanical object called a polarite. Interplanetary explorers Darren McGavin and Nick Adams also encounter a frozen Russian cosmonaut, who returns to life and joins them in their war with the polarite. Restricted by a glaringly low budget — witness the shoddy model effects and the over-reliance on Nasa stock footage — famed director of cult turkey Santa Claus Conquers the Martians Nick Webster does manage at least to keep the drama on course. The soundtrack is pure dated hippy, with songs by the Forum Quorum. Actor Adams died of a drug overdose before the film was released.

Majorjon#1 from HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, 12th March, 2004

This films tries to emulate the classic 2001 A Space Odyssey, but falls way short of the mark. You can see it desperately trying to be atmospheric, offering a realistic portrayal of space travel in the near future, however it comes across as just very slow and dull. You have to wait half way through the film before anyone gets to Mars and something interesting actually happens. The ending was predictable and straight out of a Walt Disney movie. Stick to 2001 or 2010.

Woeful

Simon Pearce from sevenoaks, 1st June, 2004

I just wish I'd read the reviews above before I got this. 90mins of total non-sequiteur scenes that barely form a cohesive whole, a cringingly embarrassing attempt at establishing character and story for the first 20mins. There is an interesting 10mins at the end but it's not worth the wait. Even the most avid Sci-fi anaorak would not enjoy this file. Avoid.

Is this the bad one or the really bad one?

A Customer from a living room, 7th January, 2006

There were two 'Mars' films in this year. One was just bad, this one though I went to see at the cinema. i will never be able to get those two wasted hours back.

A Customer from uk, 19th March, 2007

this was a good film all round. I thought the creature that looked like a tornado was quite disturbing though but other than that a good film for sci fi fans
