The city of Calcutta, 1962. A city so vibrant, so alive, so stylish. It was referred to as 'The Paris of the East'. This exotic backdrop serves as the perfect locale for the tender, immortal love story about to unfold. A young girl, Lolita. Orphaned at an early age, she is sent to live with her uncle's family where destiny introduces her to a young boy: Shekhar, a budding musician, a son of an affluent businessman. Together, through childhood and adolescence, Shekhar and Lolita share joys and sorrows, fond memories and bittersweet experiences. And unknown to them, a relationship of deep friendship and trust takes place. It is an unspoken right they hold over each other that metamorphoses into a love so intense, they do not even see it coming. It takes the arrival of an outsider, Girish, for them to discover their true feelings for each other. The chemistry between Lolita and Shekhar sizzles and sparkles, till it explodes. But fate has something in store for them. Greed, deception and malicious intent are waiting to plague Lolita and Shekha'rs deep and innocent love. Events twist and turn beyond their control, spin around them in a maze of suspicion, misunderstandings, and exploding tempers…till even their love cannot stop them from being torn apart. Can true love conquer these insurmountable obstacles, or will it succumb to them? Will Lolita and Shekhar be forever swept apart by these tumultuous events or can they fulfill their destiny and come back together?

Old wine in Refreshing New Bottle

A Customer from Welwyn Garden City, 3rd March, 2006

Parineeta is a lesser known Sarath Chandra classic , the more famous one being Devdas. But one can find many similar shades between the two stories. Small town Boy and Girl being neighbours, childhood friends, Rich Boy Poor girl, grow up to love each other....The difference being while one ends up in tragedy, the other has a happy eneding. This movie has brilliant performances from the lead actors. Sanjay Dutt breezes past in his role as a chic bachelor. New find Vidya Balan typifies the girl next door while looking extremely comfortable in her first film. The surprise package is Saif Ali khan who has finally come of age and proves that he can do roles other than constantly portraying a metrosexual peter pan. Brilliant music and after a long time melody returns to the screen in bollywood without much use of synthesised music, though the jazz number is straight lift. Vidhu Chopra has gotten back to his ways of providing good entertainment after a spate of horrible movies. Though he hasnt directed this one himself, his style is evident in the soft focus shots. If one overlooks the 'put on' Bengali accent, this is an overall 'feel good' movie which does justice to this classic piece of Sarath Chandra's literature

Elegant, high-quality Bollywood

A Customer from Oxford, England, 13th April, 2007

I avoided watching this after it arrived for a few days, thinking it would be depressing (on the order of Devdas). I was pleasantly surprised. Not over-the-top like many Bollywood films, but still colourful; the quieter feel allows you to become emotionally interested in the characters rather than simply dazzled in the spectacle. Also, as it's shorter than a lot of Bollywood, it's a great movie to start your friends on!

Not bad... a nice movie, with really beautiful songs. Saif Ali Khan gets a chance to emote. Vidya Balan is slightly overrated, but...not bad.

Disappointing

Mal from from Gloucester, 26th September, 2008

This movie was very slow and not very entertaining. It's only redeeming feature was the beautiful photography of the train journey.
