Star Wars was the film that created spin-off toys and merchandise. The re-release of the digitally remastered original trilogy followed by the making of the new trilogy of prequels, has resulted in the release of countless related products in recent years. Video games have always been closely linked to the Star Wars universe, from the early vector graphics arcade, PC classics X-Wing and TIE Fighter, to recent releases like Knights of the Old Republic and the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies.

Lego, the preferred toy of many who grew up in the 80s, has sought, with varied success, to reinvent itself to stay afloat in the modern world. There have been several forays into video games, such as Lego Racers and Bionicle. On the toy side of things, licensed products such as Star Wars sets have sold very well, bringing strange, mingled feelings of delight and frustration to those who spent their childhoods trying to build their own designs of X-Wing and Millennium Falcon from less specialised bricks.

Now, a triumvirate of childhood obsessions, Lego, Star Wars and video games, are brought together in one startling mixture: Lego Star Wars. Set in the more recent films, Episodes I to III, the game allows you to become a Jedi Knight and battle the forces of darkness. You can play as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Yoda, amongst others, and fight Darth Maul, fly your starfighter into battle, and use the force to construct things out of Lego bricks.

Over 30 characters are available for selection, theres two player co-operative mode, and all three prequels storylines feature, offering a bit of a sneak peek as the third film has not even been released at the time of writing. To make the experience more real, the game also features sound sampled straight from the movies. So if you like Lego, Star Wars or video games, or some combination of the three, surely you cant ask for more than this.

Don't pass it off as a kids game.

Lloyd Jones from High Wycombe, England, 7th August, 2006

Lego and Star Wars, that dream merchandising combination. In truth this game was developed as a kids game but the end result was a platform/action/puzzler which provides something for any age gamer to enjoy. Each character type has unique abilities which need to be used together to solve puzzles and defeat a variety of star wars universe enemies. Unlocking of new characters opens allows new areas of previous levels to be explored, something that adds replay value. The tongue-in-cheek take on the Episodes 1,2 and 3 storylines convey enough with a wink here and a grunt there that dialogue is not missed. There are some lovely moments in the cut scenes (Obi-Wan's litghtsaber not working is classic) and some truely inventive co-operative puzzles (2 player makes these all the more rewarding). There are downsides, this isn't the hardest game but the game would not be as half as fun if it were harder, go elswhere if you want a meatier Star Wars game. There are occasional frustrating camera issues which I hope will be resolved in the sequel. One happy gamer is looking foward to playing through the original trilogy in Lego Star Wars 2.

Excellent fun

Stephen Willetts from Derby England, 29th January, 2007

This game is excellent fun. OK its not 100% perfect and it doesn't take a lot of skill to play, but its true to the Star Wars Movies. I'm not a child and I enjoyed playing it. I look forward to playing the sequel as well.

Great Game

A Customer from Warrington, 12th April, 2006

My 8 year old son loved this game, so much so, that I have ordered a copy for him. The two player mode is great.
