the disenchanted spices

tanushree from london, UK, 3rd May, 2006

I have to say, this is probably the worst movie Ive seen......atleast for a long time. The plot sounded great & mystical.....about a gifted indian girl who knows the magic of spices & knows remedies for most emotional ailments, about how she survives difficulties, ends up in san-fran, living a secluded life dedicated to the above, till she meets the handsome Dylan McDermott(of 'the practice' fame)& falls in love..only to realise that love will ruin every other thing she holds precious, & then its the test between the two. Now, with a plot like that, you can make a great movie, but no! what we see is a boring adaptation of an intelligent novel with aishwarya, aishwarya & more aishwarya. She is un-spontaneous, dreadfully stiff, she shows no animation when she talks to the spices....even the feeble attempt at humour by anupam kher is sadly lost. The begining is dull, then it just drags without ever capturing the essence of the tale & the end is,well... its incredibly stupid! in short, there is nothing to recommend this movie, i suggest you would get much more out of the book instead!

Flavourless

Rehan from , 22nd March, 2007

I really think everything Gurindher Chadha does is well-intentioned - stressing the acceptance of multiculturalism, tolerance, understanding etc - so you don't want to be unkind: but, my goodness, you really wish she didn't try so hard sometimes. The shmaltzy predictability of this is toe-curling, and while fairy-tales have to have a fairy-tale quality, the utterly ridiculous premise of this silly film (that a mystically blessed woman is in thrall to the Power of the ... Flavourings that rule her) is beyond absurd. Watching the convolutions the principals undergo to avoid Aishwarya Rai kissing anyone and thus blitzing her Subcontinental fanbase (HORRORS!) is about the only amusing thing about this largely embarrassing film. The only mystery is that some poor suckers actually funded such nonsense.

Not enough spice!

Cathy from Coventry, 18th May, 2006

From the husband of the director of bend it Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice - now there's a tag line you don't hear every day! Sadly, this film lacks Gurinda Chadha's lively comic touch. It's pretty - like its stars, but ultimately rather dull. If you like slow paced, thoughtful movies, you might enjoy this one. Otherwise, go for Bride and Prejudice.

This is a really dull film with a very weak story line which is pretty stupid and badly done. You might like this if you............................. no, sorry, can't think of any reason you might like this!

Mistress of ...

Very disappointing. Story was too cheesey and over romantic. Was hoping for a flim like 'Chocolat'. Started well but then just turned into a run of the mill romance.
