Both of the leads in the French action flick DISTRICT 13 practice parkour, a kind of urban gymnastics that looks a little like skateboarding without the skateboard, and the pleasure of this short frenetic film is watching the two lithe heroes leap through windows, run up walls, and jump off buildings. Like Jackie Chan, Cyril Raffaelli, and David Belle, both stuntmen-turned-leading-men perform their own acrobatic martial arts sans special effects or invisible wires, and the lo-fi fight sequences pack a gritty punch that is often missing in slick Hollywood fare. The plot involves a futuristic France where the worst ghettos have been walled off from the rest of society, their schools shut down, and the police force evacuated. The people in power simply want to ignore the plight of the disenfranchised, but this becomes difficult to do when the most notorious gang, led by the wild-eyed Taha (Bibi Naceri), gets its hands on a nuclear warhead and proceeds to demand a 20-million-Euro ransom, with the city of Paris as its hostage. Enter Damien (Raffaelli), a one-man police strike force, who has 24 hours to disarm the missile. To help him navigate the war zone of District 13, he springs a vigilante antihero, Leito (Belle), from jail. Leito has personal reasons for taking down the crime lord: Taha has turned Leito's adolescent sister into his junkie pet. As the ultra-athletic duo go up against Taha's gangster army, they repeatedly (and conveniently) lose their guns, and are forced to improvise, thrashing goons with steering wheels, cinder blocks, and their foreheads. Lovers of action flicks could ignore the English subtitles completely and still relish the hyperkinetic beauty of the whip-quick combat.

Viva la Pakour

KH08 from Bristol, 11th October, 2006

WOW WOW WOW WOW. Forget your van Damne, forget dare I say it Jackie Chan and forget even Ong Bak. The action in this film is amazing in particular the opening chase and the casino scene. Even the fight scenes are well crafted. If you admired the wacky French PAkour boys (BBC did the advert of the guy getting home to watch telly) jumping and flying then check this out. Don't bother with the crap English dubbing stick with the french language and subtitles. Sit back and enjoy

Woah!

MikeyboyPaines from from Fareham, 26th February, 2007

I rented this with no expectations, and was totally blown away by the action. This is a seriously entertaining film for those who like their action fast and brutal. As with most actions movies though, don't expect anything above average acting and plot (which is a cheap rip-off of Escape From New York) - this film's about jumping, falling, hitting and being hit. The two main leads do their own stunts (from what I could gather from the DVD extra features) and their background in parkour and martial arts shines through. This really is up there with Ong Bak and Project A as a classic stunt flick. Recommended!

pure wensleydale

I thought transporter 2 was, well, a bit poo. This manages to run it very close as one of the worst films i have ever seen. Plenty of dire acting and dialogue (dubbed version) but the worst part by far was the stupid action scenes. We can find considerably more entertaing urban gymnastics on google video without having to be subjected to a most dreadful and cheesy storyline. To b generous I have given it 1 star for the chavtastic scooby, that brings a whole new meaning to the term 'bulletproof'.

Fight, after fight, after fight, after fight. 6/10.

Graham from UK, 14th February, 2010

We had heard some great things about this film, and with the second instalment now out we quickly upped this to a high priority title. At the end of the evening I think we are both pleased to have seen it, but neither of us could say we would ever watch again or that it was anything special, more just pleased to have realised the truth. The story begins in Paris and follows a young tattooed man living in a derelict District (13) now walled off and long forgotten by the government and the rest of Paris. Inside the walls a battle of criminal power ensues leading our lead man to take on the bad guys and the government to save District 13. The story is good, if only vaguely explored, and we could not disagree that the action was impressive, but how much action was there? Fight, after fight, after fight, after fight…and as good as it was it was clearly overkill and detracted from an otherwise promising story. Not as gritty or well structured as we thought but entertaining enough to see once. 6/10. 3 Stars.

Weak storyline

A Customer from Cottingham, 11th January, 2010

I thought the film had a very poor story line. Watching it with English dubbing is painful and the voice actors are unconvincing. The background music is too loud in places making it difficult to hear what they are saying. The mix of accents is rediculous. You will like this if you enjoy violence!

empty parcour

dirkp1966 from , 6th December, 2009

Yes, the parcour is impressive... unfortunately, that's about it. The martial arts is just too obvious: whenever he's out of bullets, no one shoots, whenever he has bullets, everyone shoots... and the story line ripped off from that 80s movie 'Escape from New York.' Ludicrous movie that's only fun to watch if you've had one too many drinks and need to waste 85 minutes.
