Billie Offer (Barrymore) is a young singer from Bakersfield with more heart then talent. Huck Cheever (Bana) is a poker player whose emotions at the table often undermine his exceptional skill, especially when he is heads up with his father, poker legend L. C. Cheever (Duvall). The one aptitude Billie and Huck seem to share is a knack for reading people - the difference is what they do with that gift. While Huck's instincts enable him to take advantage of his opponents at the poker table and expertly avoid both emotional connections and long-term commitments in his personal life, Billie uses her intuition to see the emotional truth of those around her and sympathize with their pain. When these two meet, the real game begins.

Cards on the table... its not really worth a gamble...

PaulaWestwood from , 24th June, 2007

If you can watch approx 1 hour 40 minutes of poker playing, with 15 minutes of sort of rom-com added its for you, if not it really really will wear you down. It is sort of good enough, but there is just way way too much poker playing going on to make this anything like entertaining. I know nothing whatsoever about playing the tables, and after this I don't feel like I have missed out on much. You could give this one a miss.

Calling all Poker Players

Rob Wright from England, 16th September, 2007

This is an ok Rom Com but where it shines is as being the best Poker movie since Rounders. You will lose count of the number of Poker stars that Cameo in this film its like an invitation only night at Full Tilt Poker also manages to capture some of the glory and pain of the game.

Great movie if you like poker/slower music

A Customer from Leicester, 5th December, 2007

Great movie, great soundtrack (especially the new dylan song). It's a fairly typical romantic comedy menu, with a lot of poker playing thrown in. If you like poker playing, it's great, but as you see from the other reviews, if you're not a card fan, pass on this one. There's too much card psychology for you. In America everyone appears to be getting into watching texas hold 'em and this movie capitalizes on it.

I'm Lucky Day!

JHawk from , 21st July, 2010

A likeable character drama from the talented director, Curtis Hanson, this is all about gambling, so if you hate card games, then don't even bother with this movie. Eric Bana is Huck Cheever, a Las Vegas professional card player & the son of legendary card shark, L.C. Cheever (Robert Duvall, in one of his best roles in years; he is awesome). Huck is getting together enough cash to buy a seat at the impending world series - but his inability to resist the lure of the cards means it's taking longer than he'd like. Then into his life walks the good natured Billie Offer (the ever-luminous Drew Barrymore), in Vegas to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. In normal Hollywood fashion, you'd expect either; a) a romantic comedy to ensue, or b) a predictable schmaltzy redemption play. This is neither... and perhaps a bit of both! It's primarily a slow-burning character study (reminding me of fare seen in the 70's & 80's, like Atlantic City), which isn't flashy, just solidly entertaining and engaging. With a brilliant script by Eric Roth (& Hanson), that is briskly directed, this is entertainment of the kind rarely seen these days. An excellent movie that you should give a chance.

father and son

RainbowJoBirko from , 19th June, 2010

I rented this because I love all things Drew Barrymore, but I wasn't over keen on her character in this, a bit soft and soppy! I quite enjoyed the film though, was fine to switch off the brain and just absorb. I didn't think Bana and Barrymore had much chemistry though, but I enjoyed the father and son storyline.

Poker face

RB66 from , 12th April, 2010

More about poker than romance, would have liked to see more than poker tables. More could have been made of the conflicting relationships. A couple of comic scenes, all in all a disappointing film. Still love Eric Bana though!!
