superb

williamsgwynfa from , 25th April, 2007

this is a superb film. it is a change of pace for Russell Crowe in the warmly romantic movie called 'A Good Year'. the film shows a charm and humour, which will appeal to fans of a good love story, as well as the beautiful scenery in Provence. Russell Crowe plays Max, a high-powered, unscrupulous, but very funny, and highly successful investment broker, who is something of an expert. He has little time, for life outside his work. When his estranged uncle dies ( who is played by Albert Finney, in flash back form), Max inherits the vineyard in France where he grew up as a child. Under investigation, for a more-than-a-little-shady stock transaction, the trip to France gives the broker, a chance to let things simmer down, while he unloads the property - his first intention is to sell the vineyard. Max views it as an opportunity to cash in the vinery and pocket the profits. the flashback conversations between Albert Finney's estranged Uncle's character and Freddie Highmore who played Charlie in the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp, ( who plays Max as a young boy) are particularly thought-provoking and well-written. Although Max' first intentions are to sell the vineyard for a profit, childhood memories, old friends, the arrival of an unknown, illegitimate heir, from America (played by Abbie Cornish), and a feisty, beautiful local French girl (played by Marion Cotillard) all conspire to force Max to rethink his priorities, as he falls under the spell of Provence. well worth renting out.

Not Such a Good Year!

A Customer from Scotland, 14th May, 2007

This is the kind of film made for 40-something fantasists who positively ache to be in the shoes of Russell Crowe's character. He is rich--he has no responsibilities--he inherits a dream home in France worth about £5 million pounds--he gets together with the local village hottie...the cliches come at you thick and fast in this not very good pot boiler. Crowe's character succeeds in being totally obnoxious, and the development at the end regarding the inheritance had me laughing out loud--it was utterly ridiculous. A good film for people who need to live vicariously through cardboard cut-out have-it-all characters!

Feel good....

A Customer from North London, 3rd November, 2006

I was really suprised that I could enjoy watching Crowe in a movie like this (so unlike what he normally does), but he brought great charisma to the character(who was supposed to be a real pratt). The cinematography was great and the movie was beautifully and lovingly done. The result will please viewers that go to see this film with an open and welcoming mind!

Don't even bother

A Customer from London, England, 21st May, 2007

After having read some poor reviews on Ridley Scott's latest offering I thought I would give it a go...I mean just how bad could a dream reunion of Scott and Crowe really be? Well, I wished I had listened as to say the film was woeful would be generous in the extreme. I don't know where to start - first off you see the cliched City rogue lording it up in a Hollywood version of a trading floor. A word of advice to Ridley - go and spend a day in the City mate, people don't shout at each other any more across the floor...it's all done on computers don't you know and has been for some time. Then it's off to Provence and the only thing that was missing was a bereted Frenchie wobling his way round on a clapped out pushbike with a string of onions around his neck. What there is of a storyline you can see a mile off...will he remain within the confines of his hackneyed character and sell the mansion and vineyard for tidy profit or will he see the light of his ways and retain it in the family for the good of everyone. No prizes for guessing folks. The plot is in that one sentence - it's that shallow.

Hold your nose, its corked.

I worship Ridley Scott: for the first Alien film; for Bladerunner and for the opening scene of Gladiator, however, this proves he's not infallible. I ignored the reviews for once to indulge in the visual ingredients but at key moments instead of dialogue there was the surprising sound of a cartoon clang. After this had happened a few times, the spell was broken and the occasional pratfall homages, which may have benefited from the odd sound affect, remained just odd. This is an identi-kit, big-budget mangling, without pause for reflection, of a potentially engaging story about interesting characters. It just went wrong. Not worth it even with the sound off. Even Albert Finney couldn't save it.

Captivating in every way.

I loved this! A mystery set in stunning Provance landscape and a person transformed by it. I wanted to pack my bags and go there! Crowe's accent a bit stilted but i could live with it.
