film good bonus no

A Customer from Yorkshire, UK, 7th July, 2005

not as endearing as the tv show but non the less a good film, don't bother with the bonus disc which follows many a dvd 'extra' plot of overally long and boring interviews with this, that and the other...especially as it counts towards a rental???

Nostalgic

donald crosby from Warsop Notts., 11th January, 2006

I remember when this was showing at every cinema in town and I could not afford either the time nor the money to go to see it. I have waited all these years and though it shows its age I enjoyed watching the film for the first time. In 1951 I was in Pusan for a couple of days taking troops out to be rammed into the front line. The whole bit of Korea I saw had a strange feel to it, (We were losing) but things turned around, we won (I think) and I picked up from the film the feeling of a country winning a war they had no idea what it was about. Very nostalgic for me.....

Not as good as the series..

Geoff900 from from Runcorn, 25th July, 2008

MASH the movie is like watching the series, but a longer version of it, it's funny here and there but not as good as the series. It's abit like watching the Dads army film basically parts you've seen from the series put into a longer version of it. The plot isn't anything you haven't seen from the series before, oh and and don't bother with the second DVD as it's just interviews with the actors in the series etc.

MASH - DVD2

A Customer from Coulsdon, 28th March, 2009

Having ordered MASH and seen it was 2 DVD's I had not expected the second DVD to be purely a commentary on the making of MASH with very few clips of any length to entertain. Not only this the few clips used were repeated several times. I had assumed the 2 DVD's would count as 1 rental - but this is not the case. If you order the 2 you will 'lose' entertainment value.

MASH

Simonleblond from , 25th March, 2009

This charming Altman war comedy has deservedly become a cult classic. Many of the themes are quite adult, but viewed through a contemporary lens the film is considerably dated. It has aged well however, and thus retains the nostalgic charm that ostensibly feels closer to Dad's Army than the darker Catch-22. The field hospital is several miles from the front, and we are never shown the full carnage of the war, but it hangs on the periphery of the proceedings like a dark spectre – horrifying injuries notwithstanding. Altman instead chooses to concentrate on the sheer lunacy and desperation of military protocol. This is amplified by the refusal of drafted surgeon ‘Hawkeye’, and his medical entourage, to conform the army straightjacket. This conflict is the basis for much of the comedy and satire, and culminates in a hilarious confrontation on the football field between medics and grunts. Up to this point the story undoubtedly lacks structure and the result is a number of amusing sketches involving an array of interweaving characters. However the excellent cast and a fair share of laugh out loud moments certainly make up for this oversight. The chaotic overlapping dialogue - a halmark of Altmans - also works well in this context

Rubber stamping the Altman Style

A Customer from London, 12th January, 2009

If you like Altman's style (overlapping dialogue with an underlying feeling of chaos), then you will enjoy this film a lot, which pokes (relatively gentle) fun at war and all its warped sensibilities. Great performances abound and you will laugh out loud at certain points (Robert Duvall showing there is more than one ways to do war crazy, given his turn in 'Apocalypse Now'), this is definitely worth renting.
