Classic Kung Fu Adventure

“Snuff-Bottle Connection” is one of those films that seems to have a cult reputation probably because it has been so difficult to get on DVD in the past. This Soulblade release has a nice selection of entertaining extras, and although the print is not perfect, it is as good as you are going to get. The basic story throws evil Russians into the mix as various Chinese individuals search for the titular snuff bottle at a time when national treasures are being sold off to foriegn powers. John Liu takes centre stage as the super kicking hero, with Hwang Jang Lee, probably the greatest screen villain in this genre, all white haired and with evil laughs to spare, as the ever present despicable adversary. This is an excellent traditional kung-fu film that certainly demands to be viewed more than once. We have a fine example of Yuen Woo Pings early ground based choreography, with quality fights throughout, but they all pale in comparison to the final throw down. This is one once rare old skool kung fu flick that you should make the effort to see. They just don't make them like this any more. Highly recommended stuff.
