Sirkasm

Melodraman from , 16th March, 2009

Sirk does it again with this savage indictment of a society whose racism forces a black girl to reject both her own mother and her colour in order to escape her 'fate', which is, at best, patronising tolerance and servitude. By comparison, the main narrative concerning the massively ambitious Lora Meredith and her pursuit of success at any cost (including the loss of true love and the virtual estrangement of her daughter), seems almost secondary. The final shot of Meredith and the two daughters in the rear of the funeral car speaks volumes. Fine stuff.

Imitation of Life

Loved this film, it is a harsh reminder of what really used to happen. How cruel society can be.. not much to say.. other than this film had me sobbing at the end...

All she desired

A Customer from Sandgate, 4th March, 2009

I have been reflecting on the title of this film and wondered from what point of view that title is given. This is a fascinating study in the rift between small town America and the big city, through the eyes of a family whose lives have been disrupted. The filming is absolutely lush and loses nothing for being in black and white. There are some interesting takes on the themes of fatherhood and motherhood (well, it wouldn't be Hollywood otherwise). Greatly enjoyed this and looking for more Sirk films to watch.
