A rural village in France becomes saturated with anxiety when a tragic accident results in the death of a local teenage boy. The heat-drenched summer landscape acquires a sinister aspect as everyone looks for someone to blame. Amidst this tense dissection of a small community's secrets the film casts a restrained yet penetrating gaze upon the life-changing summer of a teenage boy. After the death of his best friend, Sebastien has to come to terms with conflicting feelings towards him, a mix of longing and resentment complicated by past bereavments, class difference and Sebastien's burgeoning, uncertain sexuality.

two matches (to keeps eyes open please)

In killing off the only interesting character almost as soon as the film starts.......... they kill off the whole plot - and wer'e reduced to watching over an hour of nothing at all - waiting desperatly for someone to live a little... I've seen more drama whilst staring into an empty egg cup.

Not so hot

Squarecityboy from from Birmingham, 27th July, 2008

I'm not entirely sure what this film was supposed to be to be honest. A mystery, a thriller, a coming-of-age film? The plot is very thin and there are lots of dream-like sequences thrown in for no other reason in my mind than to look 'arty'. There's also one blurred nude scene, for what I can only think was an attempt at titillation to spice things up (it didn't work). When you finally find out what 'happened' it's such cop out - but by then you don't really care. Ends rather abruptly in one of those 'make up you own mind' kind of ways, but there are so few clues as to what did actually happen, again you don't really care. 1 star for being French (it would have been awful if it were American).

French cinema...

A Customer from London, UK., 26th September, 2007

My Mum (who lives in France) hates French films because 'there's no ending, they just stop'. Although sometimes I agree with her, I don't think it's always a bad thing. Life is like that - events happen, we see some of the results but we do not get to see everything through to its final resolution. This film is all about the way a community, and certain individuals in particular, react following a fatal accident. Some scenes are dream-like, perhaps imagined alternatives? The ending is left open but we are given several suggestions. As with life, we will never know what would have happened had the accident not taken place, and the film conveys that feeling of 'if only' or 'what if'.

A little padded out

Apprentice from , 16th June, 2007

Quite a promising start to this film with what you think is a good introduction to the relationship between Mickaël and Sébastien but on the death of Mickaël very early on, it all gets rather slow and confusing. You never quite get to the bottom of Sébastien's feelings or thoughts and there are many seemingly unrelated short scenes popping up along the way. It almost seems unfinished and when you least expect it the film ends. Nice summery scenes of rural France but I don't feel it offers much more.

Love's dream or nightmare

A typical French production, with excellent cast, and good unfolding, but predictable story.

Beatifully shot

simonwb from from Melton Mowbray, 30th June, 2008

Lovely looking film, set in rural France, about a lad coming to terms with the accidental death of his friend, and some related events in his town. At least, that's what I think it's about...sometimes hard to tell with French films. Nicely acted, too, although the lad's a bit of a blank canvas...maybe that's the point.

Not too bad.

Lelboy from from East London, 26th June, 2008

Whilst not always a lover of subtitled films, this is definitely one of the better ones. Not a bad plot, passably good acting (some attractive actors) and kept me entertained. Recommended.
