FLYBOYS is a good old-fashioned historical drama concerning the Lafayette Escadrille, a French regiment of American volunteer airmen serving the allied cause in WWI before the US became officially involved. James Franco plays Blaine, a Texas rancher; he bunks with Eugene (Abdul Salis), an African American boxer whose been living in Paris as an ex-patriate to get away from American racism. Other fighters include a pampered New York scion (Tyler Labine) and a lanky, lazy Kansan (David Ellison). They all train under the patient hand of the French commander, succinctly embodied by the wondrous Jean Reno (LEON). Martin Henderson (TORQUE) is good and brusque as a jaded flier with a bunch of kills under his belt and an obsession with an ace German fighter; he wont let the new kids drink in the officer's club until they’ve shot down their first planes. It all unfolds in a no-nonsense linear narrative that reminds one of early films like THE DAWN PATROL (1930) and WINGS (1927); and there's a comfortingly familiar orchestral score that's heavy with the cloud-invoking wooden flute. But the CGI-enhanced aerial dogfight scenes are the crux of the feature, and history fans should be frothing at the mouth with all the zeppelins, dogfights and enemy chivalry. There's plenty of well-researched period detail and even some romance in the form of a good girl gone semi-bad from a nearby brothel (the very charming Jennifer Decker).

Flyboys falls flat

Bertie from Croydon, England, 15th September, 2008

Flyboys tries to be Top Gun for the First World War!. Unlike Top Gun however the charaters fail to endear themselves and lack any real credability. You are left not really caring about them. The special effects are impressive, particularly the 'dog fights' and this gives it the feel of a big budget film. Unfortunately the script, storyline, and acting proves it wasn't!! For me it was yet again one of those films that relied totally on effects, forgetting that without a great script, believable characters and a good story the film will leave you ultimately disappointed. The blu ray quality is a real treat for the senses, so if you just want great effects in superb quality and script and acting are not so important then you might get something from this film!!

Excellent film based on true story

A Customer from London, 4th April, 2008

I thoroughly enjoyed this film which was a surprise. I couldn't even remember selecting it when it turned up. It tells the story of the Escadrille Lafayette which was a squadron of American volunteer pilots who fought the first ever air battles during the First World War. The script and plot was absorbing and the CGI probably the best I've seen yet. The behind-the-scenes documentaries also on the disc are a must watch too so don't forget them.

Fun Action and an amazing quality

Chantal from , 31st March, 2008

What else do you want? OK why those pilots after so long staying in France still can't speak the linguo is beyond me, and why the French have to learn English instead is even more stupid. But beyond that, this is a good movie.

"Nice" film

A Customer from Thetford, 9th February, 2009

This film has all the ingredients for a good, watchable yet not too heavy film i.e. love interest; good looking pilot; mean moody person; heroics; death of friends etc. Although it is set in the war and based around a squadron which actually existed, the characters were fictional. My hubby likes war films but we all enjoyed this (for our different reasons) even my 18 yo daughter.
