Silent Light is the latest breathtaking work from Carlos Reygadas, the controversial and prestigious director of the award-winning Battle in Heaven and Japón. Johan is the head of a family in a Mennonite community in northern Mexico. However, he goes against the law of both God and men by falling in love with another woman and, although he is honest with his wife about the affair, his actions create conflict in their otherwise serine and tranquil existence.

Worth watching for the beautiful photgraphy alone

Hannah from Greenwich, 26th March, 2008

I watched this film in the cinema and lots of people walked out before the end. However, it really is worth watching it until the end, (which may or may not be what you would expect!). If you've got the patience, this is a film which makes you think. The sunrise at the beginning is just beautiful, and there is good use of synbols throughout. The slow pace may be frustrating for some, so you do need to be in the right mood for it. The story is universal. I felt relaxed and peaceful after watching it.

Peace and love

Zamy from from London, 21st April, 2008

This is Carlos Reygardas' third film as a director. 'Japon' was an assured debut, 'Battle for Heaven' seemed a bit muddled to this viewer, although interesting for all that. With this film Reygardas has further developed his style of beautifully composed framing, longish takes and simple slow zoom or tracking shots. The hypnotic effect that this style induces is enhanced by the minimal acting style of the non-professional cast and the use of minimal dialogue. In this he reminds me of Robert Bresson and Carl Dreyer. Indeed, the miracle scene is almost directly taken from Dreyer's 'Ordet' (see my review). Reygadas' film suffers a bit by comparison: whereas Dreyer's film develops a transcendental view of the power of faith Reygardas' miracle seems more of a filmic surprise ending and not one that entirely convinces - despite its setting in a religious community. Never mind, even if it will not appeal to all tastes, this is still an exciting piece of world cinema-making and I look forward to the next film from this talented director.

Silent Light

A Customer from Abingdon, 5th July, 2008

Critics have described this film as one of the most cinematically beautiful ever shot. This may be true but it's also one of the most boring. Imagine the scene in Lawrence of Arabia where Omar Sharif rides out fo the desert - that's what every single shot in this film is like!

A love-it-or-hate-it film

A Customer from West Yorkshire, 5th July, 2008

We loved It. Wonderful photography and a very moving and deeply emotional story that slowly develops. Beautifully slow, painfully restrained - a silent scream of a film. Not for those who like the fast or the obvious. Worth going the distance.

silent images

A Customer from Brighton, UK, 2nd July, 2008

If your the sort of person who gets bored easily, you will not enjoy this. What you want is quick changing images to keep you interested and so you never get to see what something IS. The images in this film refuse to be taken lightly, again and again we are invited to see the beauty that resides in the simplest of things and be silently reminded of what we miss every day.

For those at Cannes

Slick from from Rickmansworth, 2nd July, 2008

A definite art of creation but not for those who want an easy viewing. As another view has described, you do need to be in the right mood to appreciate the cinema-photography. I do however appreciate the inspiring art form.
