Exceptional

A Customer from OX, 20th April, 2008

Probably one of the best Spanish films ever done. It is a great story that explores different aspects of a hidden part of society to many in Spain. It shows the friction between immigrants and Spanish and it expose a taboo topic 'the prostitution'. Prepare to spend the best 2 hours of your life. If you are too weak hire something else.

Princesas

SAI81 from from Tonbridge, 26th July, 2008

Candela Pena and Micaela Nevarez are both excellent as the street prostitutes around whose friendship Princesas revolves, giving bravely down to earth, realistic performances (particularly in Pena’s case in one rather upsetting scene). If this had been a two hander then it would have worked brilliantly, but the peripheral characters that drift in and out of the film don’t work. They have too little personality and, in the case of Pena’s family are so broadly played that they threaten to upset the tone of the film. The smaller storylines also feel unfinished and while it’s often no bad thing to be left with questions at the end of a film here it irritated me, feeling like writer/director Fernando Leon De Aranoa simply didn’t have enough ideas for scenes to wrap these stories up convincingly. Princesas is still worth seeing though, Candela Pena is always worth watching and here the relationship she establishes with Nevarez is beautifully realised.

I loved this movie, great script, great insight in the human side of the low class prostitutes in Spain. Put a face to the oldest profession in the world. Excellent dialogues and even monologues. Don't tell me you have never felt that way, whatever you do for a living.

Brilliant

This is Spanish cinema at it's best. Not scared to tackle difficult subject matter. This film is heart felt and harrowing in equal measures. . The leads Candela Pena and Michela Nevarez produce great performances, as 'putas' working the corners of Spain. But this is no Pretty Woman, Fernando Leon de Aranoa seeks to captures with a gritty realism, the life of these women head on. Following two female prostitutes one from the DR and the other a native spaniard the film highlights the desperation, lonliness and emotional problems that stem from working the streets, while touching on cultural tensions between natives and central American and African immigrants working in the prostitiotion trade. Seperated from her son and unable to work without a residents visa, It was heartbreaking to see Michela Nevraz's beautiful character, forced to work the streets. Highly recommend for those in search of emotionally engaging cinema.

I found this film completely engrossing as it examined an environment little known to the Spanish public and indeed to many other countries, the histories of the street girls as well as the friendships between them. It also brought into play the problems between the native Spanish population and the Latin American immigrants. I thought that the subtitles were well done and whether you are a Spanish speaker or not, I think that you will find this film fascinating.

There's something wrong with this DVD

A Customer from Glasgow, Scotland, 29th September, 2008

I can't review the movie because both copies I rented failed to function with two different DVD players, plus one PC. I can only assume they got a bad batch.
